Relaxation or Remedial Massage?

By Julia-Rose and Belida

Relaxation massage and remedial massage provide a myriad of benefits for women, with both therapies also complementing physiotherapy treatment.

Relaxation massage and remedial massage can each support you in slightly different ways:

Relaxation massage (with or without hot stones)

● Helps calm an overworked nervous system, which can ease pain sensitivity, anxiety and stress that often show up alongside pelvic floor concerns.

● Softens global muscle tension in areas that commonly tighten when you’re in pain or guarding (neck, shoulders, jaw, glutes, hips), making it easier for your physio’s exercises and manual therapy to land.

● Encourages deeper, more restorative sleep, which is essential for tissue healing, hormone balance and coping with ongoing pelvic symptoms or rehab programs.

● Uses long, flowing strokes (and optional warm stones) to improve circulation and warmth through the body, supporting recovery after pregnancy, birth, surgery or periods of reduced movement.

● Creates protected time to tune into your body in a gentle, non-clinical way, which can be especially supportive if you feel disconnected from your pelvis or wary of touch after pain or birth trauma.

● Offers an accessible option when you don’t need targeted treatment of a specific injury, but know your whole system would benefit from softening, slowing down and being cared for.

Remedial massage

● Targets a specific concern or region (for example pelvic pain, hip or low-back tension, headaches, postural issues, scars or overworking muscles), using assessment techniques to evaluate which structures require the most attention.

● Works with more focused techniques to release tight, overactive or shortened muscles that may be contributing to pelvic load, pain, altered posture or difficulty performing everyday activities or exercise.

● Can support recovery from injury or surgery by improving circulation, reducing protective muscle spasm and helping you move with more comfort.

● May help reduce pain intensity and improve range of movement, so daily tasks like walking, lifting, exercise, intimacy or caring for children feel more manageable.

● Integrates well with a pelvic physio treatment plan, with your therapist able to focus on the same muscle groups or movement patterns your physio has identified as important.

● Suits clients who are wanting a treatment that is still nurturing but more ‘problem-solving’ in nature, with clear goals linked to a particular condition, diagnosis or area of dysfunction.

Both styles of massage sit within the Hatched House approach of nurturing, evidence-informed care, and can be tailored to support your pelvic health journey either independently or alongside physiotherapy.
